New Work

This is a painting I began for an amateur art contest sponsored by the local art association. Residents were asked to submit artwork that expressed the unique quality of life in our rural community.

Though I think it ended up cute, the strength of my painting comes from the theme and presentation.

Our area has a derogatory reference.  Those who live in these parts have been referred to as “river rats” due to the proximity of the river and the fact that some of the houses are quite “rustic.”  The home-made frame of scrap wood my husband designed really drives the point home.

This area is not without its charm, so I titled the painting “River Rats.” I have access to beauty all around me.  It’s time I get serious and share what I have.

(I don’t understand how the numbers came up at the beginning.)

I had difficulty not “drawing” this painting.  I have a feeling when the judges consider it, they will not see it as a strong painting, but more like a really nice poster or children’s book illustration.

The Art Association will be having its juried admissions in August. I’d like to be selected for membership so I can meet and mingle with other artists in the area. If this painting gets a nod, maybe it will sway the jury when they look over my application and portfolio in the fall. Wish me luck!!
