Color Work

I tried to copy a painting by Edgar Payne to get a feel for the range of color in complete shadow. Reflected light illuminates surfaces in shadow far more than one would think.

Musings

There is a certain freedom in knowing your blog is basically undiscovered. It can be argued that you would not publish something you didn’t want anyone to read. But, I do wish someone would see my blog and tell somebody else to take a look and thereby open the door for further inquiry.  Yet, I […]

Alla Prima

I finished this in class today, about 2 1/2 hours from start to finish.  At least my instructor was so happy with it, he told me not to do anything else to it and move on.  I thought it still needed work. He said it was really good. That made me happy. Oil painting is […]

Colored Pencil Drawing

Once again, I used inferior paper.  I think I just feel the need to use the materials I have even if the finished product won’t be that good.  Bristol board would have given this drawing a smooth, consistent look.  Colored pencil is still very challenging, but I’m glad I finally have something new to post. I […]

Today’s classwork

I am not really happy with this, but it is fine for five hours of effort.  I will try to fix the large rock.  It looks really dumb. The truth is, I have to admit that I am becoming more comfortable with this medium. I wish I had started thirty years ago, but learning to […]

Quick Pastel Painting

This is from a photo I took when on a boat tour down the Seine in Paris last summer. I finished it in less than two hours, so I guess it’s only a sketch.  I like it, I think…

Pencil sketch

After watching my gifted daughter produce breathtaking drawings, I had to see if I still knew how to draw. I drew everything as a child, but after my parents divorced, I hardly did much of anything.  There were lots of attempts, a few good drawings in highschool, and then one line drawing class in college. […]

New Work

This is a painting I began for an amateur art contest sponsored by the local art association. Residents were asked to submit artwork that expressed the unique quality of life in our rural community. Though I think it ended up cute, the strength of my painting comes from the theme and presentation. Our area has […]

Still Life Study

I have a bit to work on still, but I am pretty happy with this.  If you look back at my earlier still life studies, you can see I am improving. Later, I tried to make final touches in my room at home with insufficient lighting, and I sort of ruined what I thought was […]

Class Study

Obviously, this is unfinished. I went to class with low expectations, but I like the image and I think I can fix this study. I hope to work on it again soon. My pathetically low self concept will hinder my progress as a painter.  I have to battle fear just to get started.  If I don’t do […]
